Garbage disposal has been widely used by many homeowners recently. Therefore, more people begins installing a garbage disposal. But, wait! You don’t have to call a plumber and have it installed. You can install it by yourself. Here are some easy and simple steps on how to install a garbage disposal for the first time.
- Prepare the materials needed
Before installing a garbage disposal, you’d better prepare the materials. Here are the things that you will need:
- 2 Wire Nuts (size 54)
- Plumber’s Putty (.1 kg)
- Pipe Wrench
- Worm Gear Clamp
- Channel-Lock Pliers
- Flathead Screwdriver
- On-Off Electrical Switch
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Safety first
Let’s get started with the safety first. To avoid being electrocuted, you’d better go to the breaker box and turn off the power. You can put a warning sign so that the power won’t be turned on when you are still installing the disposal.
- Remove the p-trap
Loose the nuts that hold the p-trap and extension pipe using pipe wrench or large channel-lock pliers.
- Remove the strainer body
Remove the strainer body by unscrewing the large nut right under the sink that holds the strainer. Then pry off the snap ring by loosening the 3 screws using a flathead screwdriver. Then, remove the old plumber’s putty.
- Place the new sink flange
Replace the old plumber’s putty with a new one. Place it around the drain opening. Then, put the new sink flange into the drain opening. Put a weight on the sink flange to help you press it in the right place firmly.
- Install the flanges and gasket
Slide the fiber gasket under the sink. Then, backup the flange under the sink. After that, install the mounting and snap ring. Don’t forget to tighten the screws after installing them.
- Detach the knockout plug of the dishwasher
A dishwasher is always completed with a knockout plug. You have to detach it. Lay disposal on its side. Tap the plug out using a hammer and screwdriver. Detach the knockout plug that has been loosened from inside the disposal.
- Connect it to the electrical circuit
To expose the wiring, detach the plate of the disposal. Use wire nuts to connect the wires of the disposal to the power supply. Secure the power cord to the bottom of the disposal. Put the plate back to its previous place and cover the wires.
- Hang the disposal and insert the discharge tube
Align the mounting tabs with the slide-up ramps that you can find on the mounting ring to hang the disposal. Turn the lower mounting ring until all three tabs are locked into the mounting assembly while holding the disposal in place.
Insert the discharge tube into the discharge coupler. Slide the clamp over the discharge tube and position it on the rubber tailpipe coupler.
- Align discharge tube with the drain trap
Align the discharge tube with the drain trap by rotating the disposal. If you are trying to connect it to the dishwasher, attach the drain hose to the dishwasher inlet using a hose clamp. Then, lock the disposal in place when everything has been installed properly. Finally, test the disposal.
