Having a hard time figuring on how to replace a garbage disposal? Well, you can feel relieved. This article will guide you step by step on how you can replace your garbage disposal unit without hassle.
Now, let’s begin the replacing steps.
The first thing you should do before replacing a garbage disposal is to check the areas under the sink. You can measure if there is enough space for installing your disposal device.
Once you’re sure that the areas will fit, then you can access the breaker and turn off the power. Don’t forget to remove any drain lines. You can also put a rag in the main drain. Therefore you can avoid having a leaking water.
After that, you can unbind the oversized nut that located at the sink flange’s base. So it will drop down. Then you can push the strainer up to remove it.
Use a screwdriver to remove old plumber’s putty around the sink opening. You can use a rag to make sure that there is no remaining putty until the opening of the sink is clean.
Next, unbind the mounting bolts until you can access the snape ring. You can use both a screwdriver and your finger on this step.
Use a flat head screwdriver to slowly pry the snap ring off from the sink flange. This way, the mounting assembly will easily separate. Remember, to be careful so you won’t spoil the fiber gasket.
Now, you can roll a plumber’s putty on a sufficient amount. Rolled the putty by using your fingers around the opening of the sink. Then you can slip the fiber gasket and the metal backup over the sink flange.
To place the mounting ring over the sink flange, you can use only one hand. While the other hand can be used for supporting the backup ring and the fiber gasket. Make sure that the mounting ring sit flush against the backup ring.
Placed a wide rubber band around the sink flange and above the snap ring groove. This is to make sure that all of the parts are held in place.
Slide up the snap ring upon the sink flange, until it is installed properly. Now, you can remove the rubber band from the earlier step. You can also clean any plumber’s putty that leak out of the sink flange.
Remove the plug, then place the garbage disposal on its side. You can use a flat head screwdriver to push the plug. Stop to screwing when the plug placed properly inside the unit.
It’s time for you to regain the plug. Sit your garbage disposal unit upright then remove the gasket and the ring. After that, turn the disposal unit upside-down to remove the plug from inside the device.
Next, you can reinstall the gasket and its ring. Then you can look for an electrical hole to insert one wire clamp.
Again, you should make sure that the power is turned off. Next, you must remove the screw that holds the cover of the access hole to pull out the garbage disposal’s wires.
Connect the wires and secure them using wire nuts. Then you may hook up the ground wire.
Pushed the wires up into the access hole. Secure it using a screwdriver after you remove its cover.
To mount the garbage disposal you’ll likely need an assistance. Lifted up the garbage disposal system then insert the top end of the mounting gasket into the mounting assembly. Turned the lower mounting ring clockwise until it’s tightened.
First, attach the P-tap to the trap arm and tailpiece. Insert the discharge tube into the T fitting. Tightened the slip nut until it’s secure.
Insert the other end of the discharge system into the garbage disposal system. Use a screwdriver to secure all the slip nuts.
Last, you should ensure that the disposal system’s bell already slid over the disposal drain. Also, make sure that the clamp is tightened properly.
Now you know how to replace a garbage disposal thoroughly. These steps may seem a bit challenging. It is okay for you to ask for a technician if you find it’s hard to follow those steps.
