Discover the source of the leak
The leak might come from 4 parts of your disposal. Finding the source of the leak is very crucial because it will enable us decide what to do. To discover the leak, you can do these following things:
- Safety first. Turn off the power of the garbage disposal so that you won’t get shocked. Then, unplug the disposal.
- Place a small container such as a bucket, a cooking pot, or a trash can as it will be quite a mess. Don’t bother yourself with cleaning all the mess up as it can be too much trouble.
- Place the plug in the drain and fill the sink with water until it is halfway full. Put a few drops of food coloring of your choice. Any colors will do because the point of doing it is to make the water be conspicuously seen from the leak.
- Observe where the leak comes from. If you can’t find it, remove the plug from the kitchen sink. Take a flashlight and observe the sink flange, dishwasher hose, drain, and bottom of the garbage disposal.

Once you find the source of the leak, you can begin fixing your garbage disposal easily. Here are some tips on how to fix it.
A leaking sink flange
Sink flange is the part in which the disposal and the sink are directly connected. The leak happens due to corrosion. It makes the seal become loose and water leaks from it.
If you happen to find water leaking, you need to detach your garbage disposal from the sink by using a wrench and a screw driver. Remove the preexisting plumber putty. Reseal the flange. When it’s been resealed, reconnect the disposal.
A drain and dishwasher hose leaking
If you happen to find the water leaking from either the hose or the drainage pipe, you will need to observe why it is leaking. You may need to tighten up the screws only. But if the seal is no longer in a good condition, you may need to replace it with a new one.
Water leaking from the bottom of the disposal
If water leaks from the bottom og the disposal, there might be broken seals inside of the disposal. The best way to fix this problem is by replacing the seals. But the broken seal tends to lead to garbage disposal replacement. It could be a little bit pricey, but it’s easier and economical.
